and
storing boot photos—that's why
we preserve your photos in their original, uncompressed resolution

New photo gallery

I'm excited to introduce the new photo gallery experience in Patina Project.
Please update Patina Project to v12.0.0 to enjoy the latest features.
The problem
From the beginning, I envisioned a photo-viewing experience in Patina Project that allows you both to cycle through photos and scroll down to learn more about the pair that's pictured. Until today, this has been broken up into two separate experiences:
  • Feed photo: Open a photo and scroll down for more details—but you couldn’t swipe left/right to see additional photos.
  • Album photo: Open a photo and swipe left/right to browse the album—but to read more about a photo, you had to exit the gallery and switch to the Specs tab. Furthermore, taller photos were sort of cramped to fit into the screen space.
Combining both horizontal swiping with vertical scrolling has historically been a challenge to get right. Recently, I discovered the right solution and immediately went to work.
Multi-photo posts on the feed
After opening a multi-photo post on the feed, you can conveniently swipe through the remaining photos.
Multi-photo feed post
A page counter will be displayed on top to show you how many photos are left to see.

Album browsing
You can now quickly access specs below each photo. Scroll further down to access store recommendations and similar photos.

New menu for premium photo features
To tidy things up, we moved the photo tools for Supporters into a dedicated menu.
Photo actions menu
For only $4.99/mo, you can unlock more photo features while supporting our mission to organize and share footwear knowledge with the world!
Web browsing
We also added arrow buttons to cycle through previous/next photos when browsing on web:
Improved and fixed
  • Deleting a photo now properly exits the edit screen. Shout-out to patinatimes for reporting this!
  • The five latest changelog posts are now included in notifications. Note that older posts may need to be re-dismissed.
  • Switches are once again the correct tan color.
Conclusion
We’d love to hear your thoughts, so don’t hesitate to reach out or drop feedback in the Patina Project Discord.

We’ve recently introduced banner ads to help sustain our work on Patina Project. While ads aren’t our primary long-term revenue strategy, they will help cover our ongoing costs and allow us to afford more help.
Go ad-free
For only $4.99 a month, you can
enjoy an ad-free experience
and directly support the ongoing development of Patina Project. Every subscription means you’re not just hiding ads—you’re fueling our mission to organize and share footwear knowledge with the world.
Thank you for being part of this journey!

The roadmap
Over the next few months, we’ll be working on a major content platform upgrade. The new content platform will feature an admin dashboard that will allow us (and contributors) to grow Patina Project's database and support more use cases with zero additional code. This tool will make it easier to:
  • Grow our database of brands, models, leathers, lasts, and more.
  • Support new filter categories such as tannery, style, color, and origin.
  • Further support specific interests, such as vintage and raw denim.
The new content platform will power these upcoming features:
Improved
  • Redesigned the Home tabs to look nicer.
  • Added a prompt to make it easier to share after posting.
Fixed
  • Android: Fixed sharing links.
  • Version update alert is no longer stuck on the screen.
  • Theme now has the correct colors again.
  • Web: Searching no longer crashes the page.
  • Web: Link previews should now appear again.
Conclusion
We’d love to hear your thoughts, so don’t hesitate to reach out or drop feedback in the Patina Project Discord.

We had a productive weekend squashing some bugs!
Photo colors are more accurate
All photos on the app should reflect their original colors more accurately. We fixed an issue that was causing color loss to some photos after being resized for display within Patina Project.

  • Made badges more self-explanatory and compact.
  • Removed the "Complete Your Sizing Profile" task on the home screen.
  • Removed the social buttons from reviews in boards.
Fixes
  • Signing in no longer goes back to the sign in screen.
  • Comment input is no longer blocked when entering the comments screen from the photo gallery.
  • Exiting the add, edit, or comment screens now goes back to the correct screen.
  • iOS: Letters no longer slide upwards when typing into text boxes.
  • iOS: Prevent vertical movement when scrolling through some horizontal lists.
  • Android: Downloading a photo no longer creates a duplicate in the Camera album.
  • Fixed an error preventing comments on older photos from sending notifications.
  • Fixed the alignment of some icons in the Specs section.
  • The heel name is now correctly displayed in reviews.
  • Loading more products no longer makes the Browse Sales button disappear.
Enjoy!

Improved
  • Contest submissions are now labeled with "February submission" when viewing in fullscreen mode.
Fixed
  • Prevented issues where photos would not appear after posting, and an app restart is required to view them.
  • The save and reaction buttons now open their respective modals when in the photo gallery view. This required trading out the down swipe gesture that previously closed the gallery, but this usually conflicted with the horizontal swipe to view next photo anyway. Let me know in Discord if you have any feedback on how the new gallery feels to use.
  • Temporarily removed product links from search results due to large numbers of product links overwhelming the community-worn pairs for some brands. We will re-introduce products here when we build a sensible way to balance the product and community results. If you are interested in searching for products, please select the
    Shop
    tab.
New stores
Product recommendations will now include new stores. Please welcome:
  • HappyPatina
  • Brooklyn Clothing Co.
  • Russell Moccasin
  • Craft & Glory
Enjoy!

  • Profiles no longer show duplicates of an item.
  • Android push notifications are now working again.

  • Reduced layout shift caused by web sidebar appearing after page load.
Howdy! I hope everyone’s having a great start to 2025. I just wrapped up a huge project to roll out the new Patina Project website at patinaproject.com. This is our first big step towards supporting web browsers as a first-class platform. A key improvement to the new website is that it is now discoverable by search engines, so Patina Project will now be able to help answer your questions in Google Search and Images.
✨ Simpler domain name
✨ Descriptive Photo, Review, and Item links
Fun fact
: The "viberg-service-boot-gallun-moose-viking-calf" segment actually doesn't matter—it's just there to help you know what the link is for. This also ensures links don’t break if you update your specs. The ID at the end is what uniquely identifies the item. See this in action here: https://www.patinaproject.com/photos/whatever/igeiLuu
Also, all existing app.patinaproject.com links will continue to function and redirect to their patinaproject.com counterparts.
✨ Pretty Profile URLs
We’ve overhauled profile links to be shorter and more descriptive. No more gnarly slug strings—your profile now lives at patinaproject.com/your-username. For a peek at how it looks, here's my own profile at patinaproject.com/tlmader.

New web navigation experience
✨ More improvements
  • Redesigned tabs and filters and made them more visually consistent.
  • Background section is now collapsed by default when viewing photos.
  • Added explanations for how photos and camera permissions are used.
🛠️ Bug fixes
  • Temporarily disabled Size Guides due to crashes, but they’ll be back soon.
  • Special characters are now handled correctly in URLs.
  • Save counts on items are now correctly shown when not signed in.
  • Removed the incorrect "Finisher" badges being displayed on Thunderdome 1 pairs.
